How it works
1. Seek out some pals to play with. It’s best if you can gather as many people as you can. The ideal number of players for Ghosts in the Graveyard is three.
- As you go along, you can change the number of players. Simply wait till the subsequent round if anyone wishes to participate. Likewise, it’s acceptable if someone decides to depart.
- Try to play with three or more players. The rounds will go longer and may be more enjoyable with more participants.
2. Define the field of play. The bounds can be a few houses, a few yards, or another location in the neighbourhood. If the Ghost is discovered, you will also need a home base where everyone can retreat.
- Ensure that everyone is aware of the rules of the game. You might even stipulate that a player is eliminated for the round if they step outside the lines.
- The players flee to your specified safe location when the Ghost is discovered. It might be a large tree, the front porch, the rear patio, etc. Try to choose a location where everyone may touch or stand.
3. Make a choice for the Ghost. You can choose a number, ask for a volunteer, play rock, paper, scissors, or any other game you choose to do.
- If you want to choose a ghost in the traditional manner, have each player stand in a circle with both of their feet. Then one person taps one foot for each word of a rhyme. The player takes one foot off each time the rhyme finishes. Up until there is only one foot left, the rhyme is repeated. The Ghost is that individual.
- This could be a rhyme: “In a dish, bubble gum, bubble gum. What number of pieces do you want?” Afterwards, whoever has their foot touched says a number. After adding up that amount, the leader declares, “And you are out.”
- The losing player chooses the next Ghost after the opening round. The last player to enter the safe zone was this one. If you choose, you can also use the first person.
4. Begin the round. The Ghost goes off to a hiding place outside while everyone else stays at home base.
- Within the prescribed parameters, the Ghost must conceal itself. There is nowhere the Ghost can elude detection.
- The Ghost should seek refuge someplace remote from the base. The Ghost will have a better probability of tagging a player if they find a concealed location further away.
5. Count while the Ghost is hiding. “One o’clock… two o’clock… three o’clock…” and so on, up to twelve o’clock, slowly chanting as a group. Then yell, “Midnight! I’m hoping the Ghost won’t appear tonight!”
- Alternatively, you can all chant, “Starlight, star brilliant, I hope to see a ghost tonight,” after counting to 50. You want to allow the Ghost enough time, depending on the size of the playing area and the number of hiding spots.
6. Leave the base and look around the cemetery for the Ghost. The Ghost’s task is to appear, catch a player off guard, and tag them.
- Any player who comes across the Ghost should cry, “Ghost in the graveyard!” and make an effort to flee. When the Ghost captures a new victim, that person alone remains a ghost.
- The last player to arrive at the base becomes the new Ghost if the Ghost is unsuccessful in catching anyone.
